Invoice calculator
Add up an invoice with tax and an optional discount, and see the total your client owes without the mental arithmetic.
Estimate only. Figures update as you type. Not tax advice — see the note at the bottom of this page.
Getting an invoice total right
The order of operations matters more than it looks. A discount applies to the subtotal, then tax applies to the discounted amount, and any deposit already paid comes off the end. Get that order wrong and you either shortchange yourself or overcharge the client, and both cost you something.
Do freelancers charge sales tax
It depends on what you sell and where. Many professional services are exempt from sales tax, while goods and some services are not, and the rules vary by state. If you have never charged it, that is worth confirming for your specific work rather than assuming either way.
Deposits and balances
If you took a deposit up front, the invoice at delivery should show the full total, the deposit received, and the remaining balance. Clients appreciate seeing the whole picture, and it prevents the awkward conversation where a deposit is forgotten by one side.
Common questions
Should I charge sales tax as a freelancer?
Often professional services are exempt, but goods and certain services are taxable, and rules vary by state. Confirm your specific situation rather than assuming.
How do I apply a discount and tax together?
Apply the discount to the subtotal first, then calculate tax on the discounted amount. This calculator does that automatically.
What if I took a deposit?
Enter it in the deposit field and the balance due reflects what remains. The invoice should still show the full total for clarity.
